The new year is right around the corner, and if your wedding day is on the horizon, now's the time to give yourself some resolutions to help you plan your celebrations.
1. I will cherish being engaged.
During the hectic wedding planning process, it's easy to become overwhelmed and forget how special it is to be engaged.
It's all too easy to get bogged down in the finer details of your celebration, or worry constantly about future family dramas. And not remember the fact that you're getting married! This is such a special time and it's important to rekindle your romance with the fun side of the whole affair, and embrace each other at this time.
Enjoy being engaged again and plan some cosy winter dates or special nights in. Show some appreciation for each other and maybe surprise your partner with a gift, or arrange a night out that they, or both of you will really love. You'll (hopefully) never be engaged again, so cherish this time before its gone.
Oh, and don't forget to admire your shiny engagement ring!
2. I will not think about other people's wedding budgets.
It's understandable when planning a wedding to wish your budget was a bit bigger. As much as the Jones' had, or your workmates were given for their big day. Then you could pull off a fantastic wedding.
But all the cash in the world pales in comparison to the love and joy that really makes a celebration spectacular. Focus on all the fabulous stuff you can afford, and how you can make your wedding feel unique.
Money doesn't make weddings better, and wishing you had more of it only makes the planning process less enjoyable.
3. I will treat my mind and body well.
We know you want to look amazing walking down that aisle, and you will, trust us! But not everything about looking good is external. You have to be smart and healthy too in the lead up to your big day if you really want to achieve your beauty goals.
A severe diet plan and a military style workout regime may well help you lose a few pounds, but it's likely to put you on edge, and leave your body craving the things it needs.
Wedding planning is tough and taxing on the brain, which often makes it so easy to slip into bad habits. Which is why it's important to set yourself a diet and exercise plan that allows for indulgences along the way. Give yourself days off, and schedule in moments just for you that don't involve strenuous exercise or brainwork. Whether that's a day out with friends, a few sessions at the local spa or some fish and chips at the seaside.
Look after your body, mind, and soul and there's no doubt you'll radiant on your wedding day.
4. I will just let go… a bit.
You can't make everyone happy, so stop feeling guilty about decisions some people don't agree with. Things will go wrong on the day too, they always do. Don't beat yourself (or others) up when plans don't quite go to, plan.
Expect excellence from your wedding suppliers and loving support from your family and friends, but let go of the idea of perfection…
No matter how organized you are with your wedding planning, everything will not run smoothly — and that's ok. Be ready to give people, including yourself, a big break!
5. I will finalise my guest list.
One of the toughest wedding planning tasks is putting together the guest list, but it has to be done. There are so many related planning things that hinge on the length and breadth of your guest list. From the venue itself, to the overall vibe of the event, to how much budget you'll need. Therefore, you must draft it out sooner rather than later.
Once it's sorted, you'll be relieved to be past the conflicts it can create, and happy to move on to more pleasant tasks… like cake tasting and choosing your wedding dress!
6. I will not be afraid to ask for help
When it comes to planning a wedding, it's understandable to want to be in control, but every so often you’ve got to hand stuff over.
Delegate planning tasks to your (hopefully) helpful partner, and use your bridesmaids‘ skills to their full potential. After all, what are bridesmaids for?
7. I will not be a Bridezilla… or a doormat.
Even the most laid-back brides can turn a little wild when the pressure strikes. But it's important to remain flexible even when times get tough. But don't give in too much, as you might become resentful.
Listen to others, but also listen to your heart. If something doesn't feel right, say so, but not at the expense of friendships and relationships. If you struggle with sharing how you feel, now's the time to find that balance between getting what you want, while pleasing others and not bashing any heads in! If all else fails, have these defusing tactics in mind to help you keep your cool if things do get heated.
8. I will trust my wedding suppliers
There will be some things that have to be handed over completely to professionals and suppliers. Let them do their job, and don’t take on extra stress when you don’t have to. Have faith in their ability and release your tight grip on wedding preparations just a little!
9. I will DIY at least one thing.
Save yourself some hard-earned money and DIY when you can! It can be a fun activity to get your friends and family involved, too. You’ll get so much satisfaction out of knowing that the bunting hanging in your venue was made by your own fair hands. Or parts of the centrepieces were put together by your little cousins on a rainy Sunday afternoon. It makes the whole thing so much more personal, and unique. Just don't DIY the entire wedding!
